What GPON OLT and ONU equipment does
GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) distributes bandwidth from a central OLT (Optical Line Terminal) to many endpoints over unpowered fiber splitters. No electronics sit between the exchange and the subscriber — which is why GPON is the dominant FTTH architecture for last-mile broadband in India.
The OLT lives in the ISP's PoP or the campus core: each PON port drives a splitter tree of up to 128 subscribers over 20 km of fiber. The ONU (Optical Network Unit) terminates fiber at the subscriber end, handing off gigabit Ethernet to the router or directly to the customer's devices.
