Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 8p Gigabit CL6 PoE 2p SFP 124W 1940 (S4A29A) is an eight-port smart-managed Layer 2+ gigabit switch in which every access port supplies IEEE 802.3af/at/bt Class 6 PoE within a 124 W budget, alongside two dedicated 1G SFP uplink ports.
Class 6 is what separates it from the 1840 generation: where the older series tops out at Class 4 and 30 W per port, Class 6 carries up to 60 W, which covers pan-tilt-zoom cameras, multi-radio Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points, and powered door controllers that a Class 4 switch cannot drive.
It is the only fan-less model in the series and the smallest at 29.60 × 29.50 × 4.40 cm and 2.18 kg, so it suits an occupied room rather than a rack. Switching capacity is 20 Gbps with 14.88 Mpps forwarding, and it carries the full 1940 feature set — 256 VLANs, IPv4 static routing, ACLs, 802.1X and a USB-C console port.

Before You Enquire
Class 6 is an IEEE 802.3bt power class delivering up to 60 W per port, double the 30 W ceiling of Class 4. On the S4A29A every one of the eight access ports supports it, which is what allows PTZ cameras, tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access points and powered door controllers to run without a separate injector.
124 W across eight ports averages 15.5 W per port. Two devices drawing the full 60 W would consume most of the budget, so the practical mix is a small number of high-draw endpoints plus several lower-draw ones. LLDP allocation grants each port only what it requests.
No. It is the only fan-less model in the Series 1940, which makes it the one to specify for offices, meeting rooms and retail counters where the switch sits in the room it serves.
The S4A29A gives eight gigabit Class 6 PoE ports, a 124 W budget and 1G SFP uplinks, fan-less. The S4A36A gives eight multi-gigabit ports up to 10GBASE-T with Class 6 PoE on four of them, a 120 W budget and 10G SFP+ uplinks, with one fan. Choose by port speed: gigabit versus multi-gig.
