Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 8p Gigabit CL4 PoE 2p SFP 124W 1840 (S5E27A) is the most capable eight-port model in the Series 1840: all eight RJ-45 ports supply IEEE 802.3at Class 4 PoE within a 124 W budget, and two dedicated 1G SFP ports provide fibre uplinks in addition to the copper ports.
Two things separate it from the S5E26A. Every access port is powered rather than half of them, and the SFP pair means uplinks do not consume access capacity — an eight-port switch stays an eight-port switch even after the fibre run to the main rack is connected. Switching capacity rises accordingly to 20 Gbps with a 14.88 Mpps forwarding rate.
It remains fan-less despite the higher power budget, so it can be deployed in occupied rooms. This is the model to specify for a small site that needs fibre back to a central rack — a remote building, a mezzanine office, or a floor where copper distance limits rule out an RJ-45 uplink.
