About the Switch Series 1940

The HPE Networking Instant On Switch Series 1940 is a smart-managed Layer 2+ switch series for small businesses and enterprise edge sites that have outgrown plain gigabit switching. The series comprises eight models: three 8-port units, three 24-port units and two 48-port units, spanning non-PoE, Class 4 PoE and Class 6 PoE configurations.

Three capabilities separate it from the Series 1840. Smart Rate multi-gigabit copper appears on four models — 2.5G on the S4A32A and S4A35A, and 100M to 10GBASE-T on every port of the S4A36A. Class 6 Power over Ethernet raises the per-port ceiling from 30 W to 60 W, with series budgets running from 120 W to 600 W. And the 24- and 48-port models carry four 1/10G SFP+ uplinks in place of 1G SFP.

Every model runs the same Layer 2+ feature set: 256 VLANs across IDs 1–4093, IPv4 static routing with 32 routes and 32 routing interfaces, 802.1D/w/s spanning tree including MSTP, IGMP v1/v2/v3 snooping, link aggregation to 16 groups, port mirroring with RSPAN, and QoS with WRR or strict priority queueing plus auto-voice VLAN.

Security is enterprise-grade for the segment: TPM 2.0 hardware root of trust, IEEE 802.1X port authentication, AAA through RADIUS or TACACS+ with RADIUS-assigned dynamic VLANs, ingress and egress ACLs, and automatic denial-of-service protection. Every model carries a USB-C console port, and all features are included in the hardware price with no subscription or licensing fees.

Eight: three 8-port models (S4A29A, S4A36A and the non-PoE variants), three 24-port models (S4A30A, S4A31A, S4A32A) and two 48-port models (S4A33A, S4A34A), plus the 48-port Smart Rate flagship S4A35A — covering non-PoE, Class 4 PoE and Class 6 PoE configurations.

What are the PoE budgets across the series?

120 W on the S4A36A, 124 W on the S4A29A, 240 W on the S4A31A, 370 W on the S4A32A and S4A34A, and 600 W on the S4A35A. The S4A30A and S4A33A do not supply PoE.

Which 1940 models have Smart Rate multi-gigabit ports?

Three. The S4A32A has four 2.5G ports, the S4A35A has eight, and the S4A36A has eight ports running 100M, 1G, 2.5G, 5G and 10GBASE-T. All Smart Rate ports on these models carry Class 6 PoE.

How does the 1940 differ from the Series 1840?

20 Gbps on the S4A29A, 128 Gbps on the S4A30A and S4A31A, 140 Gbps on the S4A32A, 176 Gbps on the S4A33A and S4A34A, and 200 Gbps on both the S4A35A and the S4A36A.

Which Series 1940 models are fan-less?

Only the S4A29A. The S4A30A, S4A33A and S4A36A each have one fixed fan, the S4A31A and S4A32A have two, and the S4A34A and S4A35A have three. None of the fans are field-replaceable.

Which transceivers fit the Series 1940?

For 1G SFP: S0G20A, R9D16A and R9D17A / R9D17B. For 10G SFP+: S0G21A, S0G18A, R9D18A, and the R9D19A and R9D20A direct attach copper cables at 1 m and 3 m.
