A typical office network carries far more than laptops — IP phones, cameras, door controllers, and wireless access points all share the same cabling, and each has its own security and power needs. The job of the network is to keep those traffic types separated, powered, and manageable from one place.

This solution is built for offices of roughly 50 to 300 users that need VLAN segmentation, centralised switching, and PoE at the edge. A Layer 2 managed access layer handles segmentation; a router or firewall handles the internet edge; PoE switches power the cameras and access points without local adapters.

The design leaves headroom deliberately — spare ports and uplink capacity — because re-cabling an occupied office is far more expensive than the ports you buy up front.

Do I need a Layer 3 switch for an office?

Usually not. A Layer 2 managed switch with VLANs plus a router or firewall handles inter-VLAN traffic for most single-site offices. Layer 3 earns its cost when routing has to happen at the switch across many VLANs.

Can one switch power both cameras and access points?

Yes, provided the total PoE budget covers the combined draw. Cameras and access points share the same budget, so both must be counted when sizing the switch.

What internet edge device do you recommend?
