Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 8p Gigabit 1p CL3 PD 1840 (S5E25A) is an eight-port smart-managed Layer 2 gigabit switch and the only model in the Series 1840 that is a powered device rather than a power source. Port 1 supports IEEE 802.3af Class 3 PoE and accepts up to 13 W from an upstream PoE switch.
That single characteristic is what the model exists for. Where a small cluster of devices needs switching but the location has no spare mains outlet — a ceiling void, a display cabinet, a meeting-room table box — the switch draws its own power over the same cable that carries its uplink. It also runs from the supplied external power adapter where an outlet is available.
It is fan-less and the most compact unit in the series at 16.50 × 25.40 × 4.40 cm and 1.13 kg, with a 16 Gbps switching capacity and 11.90 Mpps forwarding rate. It carries the full Series 1840 Layer 2 feature set — 64 VLANs, RSTP, link aggregation, IGMP snooping and QoS — but supplies no PoE to connected devices and has no SFP ports.

Before You Enquire
Yes. Port 1 supports IEEE 802.3af Class 3 PoE and accepts up to 13 W from an upstream PoE switch, so the unit can run with only its uplink cable connected. The external power adapter remains an option where an outlet is available.
No. It is a powered device, not power source equipment. It draws PoE on port 1 but supplies none. For PoE output in an 8-port unit, the S5E26A provides 65 W and the S5E27A provides 124 W.
Compare the 8-port PoE modelNo. All eight ports are RJ-45 copper. Within the Series 1840, SFP uplinks start with the 8-port S5E27A, which has two 1G SFP ports, and all 24- and 48-port models have four.
At 100% traffic it draws 7.4 W at 100–127 V and 7.3 W at 200–220 V from the adapter, or 7.02 W at DC 54 V when powered by an upstream switch. Idle consumption is 5.2 W.
