About the Switch Series 1840

The HPE Networking Instant On Switch Series 1840 is an entry-level, smart-managed Layer 2 switch series for small businesses that need managed features at an accessible price point. The series comprises seven models: three 8-port, two 24-port and two 48-port units, split across PoE and non-PoE configurations.

Every model runs the same Layer 2 feature set — 64 VLANs, 802.1D STP with 802.1w RSTP, link aggregation, IGMP v1/v2 snooping, port mirroring, loop protection, auto recovery and QoS with four hardware queues — and carries a 16K MAC address table with jumbo frame support up to 9216 bytes.

On the PoE models, half the ports support Class 4 (IEEE 802.3at) PoE at up to 30 W per port, with budgets of 65 W, 124 W, 195 W and 370 W. PoE power is allocated automatically over LLDP, and PoE scheduling allows power delivery to be limited to defined hours. The 8-port S5E25A inverts this: it is itself a powered device, drawing Class 3 PoE on port 1 from an upstream switch where no line power is available.

Dedicated 1G SFP fibre ports are provided on five models — two on the 8-port S5E27A, four on every 24- and 48-port model — in addition to the copper ports, so uplinks do not consume access capacity. Security includes TPM 2.0 hardware key storage, automatic denial-of-service protection and Global Storm Control.

Which Series 1840 models have SFP ports?

Five of the seven. The 8-port S5E27A has two 1G SFP ports; all four 24- and 48-port models (S5E28A, S5E29A, S5E30A, S5E31A) have four. The 8-port S5E25A and S5E26A have no SFP ports.

What are the PoE budgets across the series?

65 W on the S5E26A, 124 W on the S5E27A, 195 W on the S5E29A and 370 W on the S5E31A. The S5E25A, S5E28A and S5E30A do not supply PoE. All PoE models deliver up to 30 W per port for Class 4 (IEEE 802.3at) devices.

Which Series 1840 models are fan-less?

All three 8-port models (S5E25A, S5E26A, S5E27A) and the 24-port non-PoE S5E28A. The S5E29A has two fixed fans, the S5E30A one and the S5E31A three; none of the fans are field-replaceable.

What is the switching capacity of each model?

16 Gbps on the S5E25A and S5E26A, 20 Gbps on the S5E27A, 56 Gbps on the S5E28A and S5E29A, and 104 Gbps on the S5E30A and S5E31A.

Can a Series 1840 switch run without mains power?

Only the S5E25A. It is a powered device whose port 1 supports Class 3 PoE, drawing up to 13 W from an upstream PoE switch — intended for locations with no available power outlet. It can also run from its external power adapter.
