Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 24p Gigabit 4p SFP 1840 (S5E28A) is a 24-port smart-managed Layer 2 gigabit switch with four dedicated 1G SFP uplink ports and no Power over Ethernet. Switching capacity is 56 Gbps with a 41.66 Mpps forwarding rate.
It is the value model of the 24-port pair. Where a floor needs two dozen wired drops for desktops, printers and unpowered devices — and the access points are powered from elsewhere or use their own injectors — paying for a 195 W PoE stage adds cost and heat for no benefit. Dropping PoE also drops the fan count to one, and this is the only 24-port model in the series that HPE rates as fan-less.
It mounts in an EIA-standard 19-inch rack with a 2-post kit included, and also supports table-top, wall and under-table mounting. Link aggregation scales to 16 groups here, double the 8-port models, which matters when trunking several SFP uplinks to a core switch.

Before You Enquire
No. All 24 ports are standard gigabit copper with no power. For a 24-port model with PoE, the S5E29A provides 16 Class 4 PoE ports within a 195 W budget.
Compare the S5E29ANo. The four 1G SFP ports (25–28) are dedicated and additional to the 24 copper ports, so using fibre uplinks does not reduce the number of available access ports.
HPE rates it at 3.1 Bel declared sound power and 18 dB mean bystander sound pressure — the quietest of the four rack models in the series. It has one fixed, non field-replaceable fan with left-to-right airflow.
16 groups with up to 4 members each, double the 8 groups on the 8-port models. That headroom is what makes trunking several SFP uplinks to a core switch practical.
Yes. A 2-post rack kit is included for EIA-standard 19-inch racks and cabinets. Table-top, wall and under-table mounting are also supported.
