Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 48p Gigabit 4p SFP 1840 (S5E30A) is a 48-port smart-managed Layer 2 gigabit switch with four dedicated 1G SFP uplink ports and no Power over Ethernet. It is the highest-density non-PoE model in the Series 1840.
The 48-port models step up in hardware, not just port count. Where the 8- and 24-port units run an ARM Cortex-A9 at 1.2 GHz with 256 MB of flash and a 512 KB packet buffer, the S5E30A runs at 1.25 GHz with 512 MB of flash and a 4 MB packet buffer — an eightfold increase in buffering, which is what keeps 48 ports of concurrent traffic from dropping frames under burst.
Switching capacity is 104 Gbps with a 77.37 Mpps forwarding rate, latency falls to under 3.3 µs at 1000 Mb, and link aggregation supports 16 groups with 8 members each — double the member count of the smaller models. Egress ACLs, unsupported on the 8- and 24-port units, are available here with 512 entries. A single fixed fan cools the unit.

Before You Enquire
No. All 48 ports are standard gigabit copper with no power. For a 48-port model with PoE, the S5E31A provides 24 Class 4 PoE ports within a 370 W budget.
Compare the S5E31ABeyond port count, the 48-port models run a faster 1.25 GHz processor with 512 MB of flash and a 4 MB packet buffer against 256 MB and 512 KB on the smaller units. Capacity rises to 104 Gbps, latency falls to under 3.3 µs at 1000 Mb, egress ACLs become available with 512 entries, and link aggregation groups take 8 members instead of 4.
Yes, with 512 entries. Egress IPv4/MAC ACLs are unsupported on the 8-port and 24-port models in the series and available only on the two 48-port units.
HPE rates it at 3.9 Bel declared sound power and 25 dB mean bystander sound pressure, with one fixed non field-replaceable fan and left-to-right airflow. It is the loudest model in the series.
14.45 × 17.48 × 1.73 in (36.70 × 44.40 × 4.40 cm) depth by width by height, weighing 8.29 lb (3.76 kg). It is a 1U unit with a 2-post rack kit included.
