Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 48p Gigabit 24p CL4 PoE 4p SFP 370W 1840 (S5E31A) is the flagship of the Series 1840: 48 gigabit access ports of which the first 24 supply IEEE 802.3at Class 4 PoE within a 370 W budget, plus four dedicated 1G SFP uplink ports.
It carries the largest PoE budget in the series by a wide margin — 370 W against 195 W on the 24-port S5E29A — and pairs it with the 48-port hardware platform: a 1.25 GHz processor, 512 MB of flash and a 4 MB packet buffer, giving 104 Gbps of switching capacity and 77.37 Mpps of forwarding. Egress ACLs are supported with 512 entries, and link aggregation groups take up to 8 members.
Three fixed fans handle the combined 48-port and 370 W PoE load, yet HPE rates the unit at 3.4 Bel sound power — quieter than the non-PoE S5E30A's 3.9 Bel. At full traffic and full PoE it draws 466.1 W at 100–127 V, which is the figure to size the rack circuit and UPS against.

Before You Enquire
Twenty-four of the forty-eight access ports — ports 1 to 24 — supply IEEE 802.3at Class 4 PoE at up to 30 W each within a 370 W total budget. Ports 25 to 48 are standard copper with no power.
At 100% traffic with 100% PoE it draws 466.1 W at 100–127 V or 452.6 W at 200–220 V, with a rated current of 4.7 / 2.3 A. Heat dissipation reaches 1590.3 BTU/hr. Size the rack circuit and UPS against those figures.
No — it is quieter despite having three fans against one. HPE rates the S5E31A at 3.4 Bel sound power and 20 dB bystander sound pressure, against 3.9 Bel and 25 dB for the S5E30A.
Compare the S5E30AThe S5E31A gives 24 PoE ports and 370 W in one 1U unit with 104 Gbps capacity. Two S5E29A units give 32 PoE ports and 390 W total but occupy 2U, need two uplink sets and cap at 56 Gbps each. Choose the S5E31A for consolidation, the pair where the drops are physically split across two areas.
Yes, with 512 entries — a capability shared only with the S5E30A. The 8-port and 24-port models in the series do not support egress IPv4/MAC ACLs.
