Overview
The HPE Networking Instant On Switch 48p Gigabit CL4 PoE 4p SFP+ 370W 1940 (S4A34A) is a 48-port smart-managed Layer 2+ gigabit switch in which every access port supplies IEEE 802.3af/at Class 4 PoE within a 370 W budget, plus four SFP+ uplinks at 1G or 10G.
Compared with the 1840 generation's 48-port PoE model, which powers 24 of its 48 ports from the same 370 W, this one powers all 48. The budget is unchanged, so the per-port average halves to roughly 7.7 W — the trade is flexibility in where powered devices land rather than more total wattage.
It carries the 48-port platform: 176 Gbps switching, 131 Mpps forwarding and a 4 MB packet buffer, with 8-member link aggregation. Three fixed fans handle the combined load at 3.4 Bel, and full traffic with full PoE draws 466.1 W.

The S5E31A powers 24 of its 48 ports; the S4A34A powers all 48 from the same 370 W budget. Total wattage is identical, so the gain is placement flexibility rather than capacity. The 1940 also lifts switching from 104 Gbps to 176 Gbps and moves the uplinks from 1G SFP to 1/10G SFP+.
